Jeff Bezos has set his sights on Liverpool: the billionaire will acquire a stake in a top Premier League club.

Amazon shares are trading near all-time highs, and its founder Jeff Bezos, according to my information, is in the final stages of negotiations to acquire a significant stake in the English football club Liverpool. The deal involves a package exceeding 30% of shares, which would become one of the largest transactions in the history of global sports.

A consortium with heavyweights

The deal is being conducted through Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns the club. The consortium, in addition to Bezos, includes Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, as well as Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook. The latter had already attempted to enter English football, but his bid to buy Chelsea in 2022 failed. The club's valuation under the deal is approximately $6 billion, nearly double the previous valuation of $4.5 billion when Dynasty Equity acquired a minority stake in 2023.

FSG bought Liverpool in 2010 for just £300 million. The current price is an impressive outcome of 16 years of successful management and capitalization growth. Notably, Bezos had previously shown no public interest in sports assets. His entry into this sector is a clear signal that the world's largest investors view football clubs as an independent and highly profitable asset class.

Market context and prospects

Let me remind you that Amazon's market capitalization exceeded $3 trillion for the first time in early August, but it failed to hold that level. The company is now worth about $2.96 trillion, with its 52-week high at $287.2. The rise in stock prices is driven by the AWS cloud business, and analysts are raising target prices, with the most optimistic forecasts reaching $400. Against this backdrop, Bezos completing his planned sale of Amazon shares worth $4 billion looks like a savvy move to diversify capital.

Liverpool is currently going through a transitional period: the club dismissed coach Arne Slot and lost winger Mo Salah. In the 2024–2025 season, the team became Premier League champions, but in the following one dropped to fifth place. New investors could become a catalyst for a new phase of development.

My view: for the crypto industry, this deal is further confirmation that traditional giants are actively seeking alternative assets. Bezos's attention to sports could prompt other tech billionaires to make similar investments, which in the long run will intensify competition for a limited number of top clubs. Whether the consortium remains a passive investor or begins a fight for full control will become clear in the coming days.
