Elon Musk: AI agents will become the dominant force on the web, pushing humans into the background
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk made a resonant statement, predicting that in the near future, traffic generated by AI-based agents will far exceed the activity of live users. In his view, this is not just a likely scenario, but an inevitable stage in the evolution of the internet.
Musk publicly supported the forecast of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, who had earlier voiced an even bolder estimate. According to his calculations, within just five years, the volume of non-human traffic could be a thousand times greater than figures related to the activity of real people. Seifert emphasized that human presence online would become no more than a "statistical rounding error" against the backdrop of a rapidly growing army of AI agents.
Reality Outpaces Forecasts
Notably, the industry is already moving along this path faster than expected. Initially, Cloudflare assumed that machine traffic would surpass user traffic only by 2027. However, actual data showed that this tipping point had already arrived in May 2026. This points to the enormous speed of AI technology adoption across various sectors of the digital economy.
The impact of AI agents will not be limited to web browsing alone. Analysts at ARK Invest forecast that by 2030, autonomous agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. According to the company's estimates, by the end of the decade, agents will process online commerce transactions worth up to $8 trillion.
Data Confirms the Trend
My own observations of reports from independent research firms fully confirm this trend. According to HUMAN Security data for 2026, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. At the same time, from January to December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%. The concentration of such requests is especially high in three sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as tourism and hospitality.
Additional data from Imperva shows that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Researchers at Fastly, in turn, recorded that in January 2026, bots accounted for 49% of all requests, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
For the crypto industry and blockchain projects, this means the need for a radical overhaul of approaches to user verification and protection against malicious activities. Identity proof systems and anti-bot solutions are becoming not just an option, but a critically important element of infrastructure. We stand on the threshold of an era where the ability to distinguish a human from a machine will become one of the most valuable skills in the digital economy.
