Elon Musk: AI agent traffic will inevitably consume the internet — human activity will become a statistical margin of error
Founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, has publicly supported a radical forecast about the dominance of non-human traffic on the global network. In his assessment, the growth of AI-agent activity is not a matter of probability, but an inevitable scenario for the development of the internet that will fundamentally change the structure of web analytics and the digital economy.
At the center of the discussion was the thesis of Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Seifert, who predicted that within five years, the volume of traffic generated by algorithms and autonomous agents could exceed user activity by a thousandfold. Musk, commenting on this assessment, emphasized that humanity is moving toward a state where people will become merely a "rounding error in internet statistics."
Reality is outpacing forecasts
Notably, these predictions are already beginning to come true faster than expected. Not long ago, Cloudflare analysts assumed that machine traffic would surpass human traffic only by 2027. However, actual data recorded this turning point as early as May 2026. Current dynamics show that automated requests are growing eight times faster than activity from real users.
According to the HUMAN Security report for 2026, from January to December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%. Moreover, more than 95% of all this activity comes from three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as tourism and hospitality. The Imperva study (Bad Bot Report 2026) shows that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic already came from automated requests. Fastly, in turn, recorded in January 2026 a bot share of 49% of all requests, with 99% of them deemed undesirable.
Economic consequences of the new era
The impact of this trend extends far beyond technical statistics. According to ARK Invest forecasts, by 2030, AI agents could account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. Analysts estimate that by the end of the decade, autonomous systems will process transactions worth up to $8 trillion in the online commerce sector.
This means we are on the threshold of a fundamental transformation not only of internet infrastructure, but also of the entire digital business model. Companies will have to rethink their approaches to web analytics, cybersecurity, and customer experience, as traditional metrics of user behavior lose their representativeness. For the crypto industry, where automation and smart contracts have already become the norm, this trend opens new horizons for integrating AI agents into decentralized financial protocols.
My expert assessment: the forecasts from Musk and Cloudflare look not just realistic, but conservative. Given the exponential development of multimodal models and the growing number of autonomous services, we could see this turning point even earlier. The key challenge will not be technological readiness, but the creation of reliable verification and security mechanisms to distinguish useful agents from malicious bots—otherwise, trust in the digital environment will be undermined.
