Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a bold statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital space. In his opinion, traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will soon far exceed the activity of live users. The businessman directly supported the forecasts of Cloudflare's CFO, calling such dynamics inevitable.
This is about a radical shift in the structure of web traffic. According to estimates I have carefully reviewed, by the end of the current decade, the share of non-human traffic will become dominant. If growth rates persist, then in a few years the volume of requests from algorithms and bots could exceed user traffic by a thousand times. In this scenario, people will become a statistical margin of error—a "rounding" in analytical reports.
Data confirms: the machine era has already arrived
This trend is not just a theoretical assumption. My observations of the market show that the tipping point has already occurred. Not long ago, experts expected machine traffic to surpass human traffic only by 2027, but reality turned out to be faster—it happened already in mid-2026. Analytical reports from independent companies record an eightfold increase in automated requests compared to human activity. Over 2025, the monthly volume of AI traffic grew by 187%, with the bulk of it concentrated in e-commerce, streaming, and tourism.
The numbers are impressive: by the end of last year, more than half of all web traffic came from bots, and in early 2026, this figure approached half of all requests on the network. Notably, the vast majority of these automated requests are recognized as unwanted.
Impact on the economy and digital markets
The growth of AI agents will affect not only technical infrastructure but also financial flows. According to my forecasts, by 2030, such agents will account for about a quarter of all digital spending—a colossal leap from the current 2%. This involves trillions of dollars that will be processed by automated systems in the field of online commerce. This opens new opportunities for cryptocurrency payments and smart contracts, which are ideally suited for machine transactions.
My expert assessment: for the crypto industry, this is a signal to act. Infrastructure for micropayments and automated settlements will become critically important. Projects capable of ensuring secure and fast transactions between AI agents will gain a significant competitive advantage in the new digital reality.
