Elon Musk: AI agents will make humans a "rounding error" in internet traffic
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has backed a radical forecast about the future of the internet: in the coming years, the activity of autonomous AI agents will far exceed human traffic. This is not just a hypothesis, but an inevitable scenario for the evolution of the network, the entrepreneur emphasizes.
Key Cloudflare forecast: non-human traffic dominates
Musk publicly agreed with the assessment of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert. According to his analysis, within just five years, the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by 1,000 times. Seifert directly stated that people in internet statistics would become nothing more than a "rounding error"—a statistical margin of error against the backdrop of machines.
"If the pace continues, in five years non-human traffic could be 1,000 times higher than user traffic," he noted, emphasizing that along this growth path, he has repeatedly erred on the side of underestimating the figures.
Notably, reality is already outpacing expectations. Not long ago, Cloudflare assumed that machine traffic would only exceed user traffic by 2027. However, this milestone was already surpassed in May 2026—a year ahead of the forecast.
Impact on the economy and commerce
The transformation will affect not only web analytics but also financial flows. Analysts at ARK Invest forecast that by 2030, AI agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, compared to roughly 2% in 2025. According to the company's estimates, by the end of the decade, agents will process transactions worth up to $8 trillion in online commerce.

My own observations of industry reports confirm this trajectory. According to the HUMAN Security 2026 report, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. Between January and December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents grew by 187%, with more than 95% of this flow concentrated in three sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and travel and hospitality.
Additional data paints an even more striking picture. The Imperva Bad Bot Report 2026 indicates that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly, in turn, recorded that in January 2026, bots accounted for 49% of all requests, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
My analysis: We are witnessing a fundamental paradigm shift. The internet, created for people, is rapidly becoming a habitat for algorithms. For the crypto industry and DeFi, this means a dual challenge: on the one hand, enormous opportunities are opening up for microtransactions between agents; on the other, the issue of verifying human identity and protecting against fraudulent bots becomes acute. Investors should closely monitor projects that solve the "proof of humanity" problem in an era of total automation.
