Elon Musk: AI agents will soon eclipse human traffic on the web — and this is just the beginning
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made a resonant statement: in the near term, the volume of traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will far exceed the activity of live users. In doing so, he supported the bold forecast of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, who previously voiced truly radical figures.
Speaking at Cloudflare's quarterly report, Seifert stated that humanity is moving toward the status of a "rounding error in internet statistics." In his estimation, if current growth rates persist, non-human traffic could exceed user traffic a thousandfold within five years. Commenting on this thesis, Musk called such a development not a matter of probability, but an inevitable scenario.
Reality Outpaces Forecasts
Significantly, the industry is already outpacing even the boldest expectations. Not long ago, Cloudflare assumed that machine traffic would overtake human traffic only by 2027. However, the facts suggest otherwise: the tipping point arrived as early as May of this year. This confirms that the adoption of AI agents is occurring exponentially, not linearly.
Data from independent studies fully correlate with this trend. According to HUMAN Security's 2026 report, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. Over 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents increased by 187%, with more than 95% of this flow coming from three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and tourism and hospitality. Imperva experts calculated that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic already consisted of automated requests, while Fastly analysts recorded 49% bots out of total requests in January 2026, deeming 99% of them unwanted.
The Financial Dimension of the Phenomenon
This is not only about a technical metamorphosis, but also about colossal economic shifts. According to ARK Invest forecasts, by 2030 AI agents could account for nearly 25% of digital spending, up from roughly 2% in 2025. Company analysts estimate that by the end of the decade, agents will process amounts of $8 trillion in the online commerce sphere.
This shift carries both enormous opportunities and serious challenges. The growth of bots, a significant portion of which are hostile, threatens data security and the integrity of web analytics. In my understanding, we are witnessing a fundamental transformation of the internet from a space for people into an arena for algorithms. Investors and businesses need to adapt their strategies now, taking into account that "digital citizens" are becoming the main consumers and, at the same time, the main threat to online ecosystems.
