Bezos targets Liverpool: purchase of 30% of the club's shares is approaching

Amazon shares are trading near all-time highs, and its founder Jeff Bezos is close to acquiring roughly a third of the English football club Liverpool. This is not just sports news, but a signal of how the world's largest capitals are revising their investment strategies.

According to my data, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns the club, could announce the deal as early as this week. It involves a consortium of investors acquiring a stake exceeding 30%, with the entire club valued at approximately $6 billion. This is a significant step that radically changes the ownership landscape in English football.

Consortium of billionaires: who is behind the deal

The syndicate is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who previously held a stake in Queens Park Rangers. Bezos is joined in the group by Eduardo Saverin, the 44-year-old co-founder of Facebook, who in 2022 already attempted to acquire London's Chelsea at auction. Bezos's wealth is estimated at over $280 billion, while Saverin's exceeds $32 billion.

FSG, which bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010, has already confirmed the consortium's interest in strategic investment in the club. In 2023, Dynasty Equity acquired a small stake, valuing the club above $4.5 billion. The current price of $6 billion caps off 16 years of profitable operation for the club.

For Bezos, this is his first public foray into football assets. His interest shows that sport is becoming an independent investment tool, not just an image project. Liverpool is currently going through a transitional period: the club dismissed coach Arne Slot and lost winger Mohamed Salah. In the 2024–2025 season, the team became Premier League champions, but in the following one dropped to fifth place.

Amazon shares: on the verge of a record

On Friday, Amazon shares closed at $274.48, showing a gain of 0.82% for the day. Over the year, the stock has risen 24.2%, and since January — 18.65%. The company's market capitalization first exceeded $3 trillion on August 3, but the record lasted only a day. Amazon is now worth approximately $2.96 trillion, with a 52-week high of $287.2.

The rally was driven by the cloud division Amazon Web Services. Analysts have raised target prices, with the most optimistic estimate reaching $400. Interestingly, Bezos this month completed a planned sale of Amazon shares worth $4 billion — the deal was scheduled eight months ago, not speculative in nature.

FSG and the consortium declined to comment on the timing of the deal. Football club finances came into focus after FIFA decided to sell a stake in the World Cup. In the coming days, it will become clear whether Liverpool's new partners remain passive investors or begin a fight for full control of the club.

My view: This deal is further confirmation that traditional assets, including sport, are becoming targets for tech billionaires. For the crypto industry, this is a signal: capital is seeking new forms of diversification, and football with its global audience is an ideal platform. Watch the developments — this could change not only the sports but also the investment landscape.
