Elon Musk: AI agents will take over internet traffic, leaving humans in the minority.
The artificial intelligence revolution is fundamentally reshaping the structure of the global network. Elon Musk has backed a bold forecast by Cloudflare's CFO Thomas Seifert, stating that traffic from AI agents will far exceed the activity of live users in the coming years. This is not just a hypothesis, but an inevitable scenario for the development of the digital ecosystem.
Speaking at Cloudflare's earnings conference, Seifert presented impressive calculations: if current growth rates hold, within five years the volume of non-human traffic could surpass user traffic by 1,000 times. In his apt phrase, humans risk becoming a "statistical rounding error of the internet."
Notably, reality is outpacing even the boldest expectations. Cloudflare initially assumed that machine traffic would exceed human traffic only in 2027, but that milestone was already reached in May 2026. The trend is clear: automation is penetrating all areas of the digital economy, from simple web requests to complex financial operations.
Scale of impact on the digital economy
According to ARK Investment Management estimates, by 2030 AI agents could account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 that figure was only about 2%. Company analysts forecast that by the end of the decade, automated systems will process transactions worth up to $8 trillion in online commerce. This will fundamentally change approaches to doing business and engaging with customers.
Independent research confirms this trend. According to HUMAN Security's 2026 report, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI-agent traffic increased by 187%, with more than 95% of activity concentrated in three key sectors: retail, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality.
Imperva's data in the Bad Bot Report 2026 shows that already in 2025, 53% of web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly, in turn, recorded that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
My expert take: This transformation creates both enormous opportunities and serious risks. The crypto industry and fintech sector need to develop verification protocols now to distinguish between human and machine transactions, otherwise we risk facing a wave of fraud and market manipulation. Investors should closely watch companies offering solutions for secure authentication in the new era of AI dominance.
