Elon Musk: AI agents will take over the internet — Cloudflare and ARK forecasts confirm a tectonic shift
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has once again highlighted the inevitability of digital transformation: in his view, traffic generated by AI-based agents will soon far surpass the activity of live users. This is not just a hypothesis, but a strategic vector that is already reshaping the landscape of the global network.
Musk publicly endorsed the analysis of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, who called this scenario not a question of probability, but a question of time. According to his assessment, if current growth rates hold, non-human traffic could exceed user traffic a thousandfold within five years. This statement came against the backdrop of Cloudflare's second-quarter report, which emphasizes that humans risk becoming merely a "statistical margin of error" in the structure of internet activity.
Reality Outpaces Forecasts
Notably, Cloudflare's initial expectations projected that the tipping point—when machine traffic would overtake human traffic—would only occur by 2027. However, actual data recorded this shift as early as May 2026. The trend proved swifter than modeled projections, pointing to explosive adoption of AI tools in mainstream business processes.
The scale of impact extends far beyond web analytics. According to ARK Invest analysts, by 2030 AI agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure barely reached 2%. This translates to a colossal $8 trillion in online commerce by the end of the decade. This is not evolution, but a revolution in the structure of the attention and transaction economy.
Data Confirms the Shift
Independent research fully correlates with these assessments. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 demonstrates an eightfold increase in automated traffic compared to user traffic. Meanwhile, from January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI traffic grew by 187%, with over 95% of this flow concentrated in three sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as tourism and hospitality.
Imperva's data in the Bad Bot Report 2026 shows that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly, in turn, records that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted by security services. This poses fundamentally new challenges for internet infrastructure.
