Elon Musk: the era of AI agents will inevitably consume internet traffic

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a bold statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital economy. In his view, traffic generated by AI-based agents will exceed the activity of live users many times over in the coming years. This is not just a forecast, but a recognition of an inevitable scenario for the network's development.

Musk publicly endorsed the assessment of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, who predicted a radical transformation of the internet landscape. According to his calculations, within five years the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousand times. "People will become a statistical margin of error on the internet," Seifert emphasized, commenting on the rapid pace of this process.

Reality is outpacing forecasts

Notably, Cloudflare previously expected machine traffic to surpass user traffic only by 2027. However, actual data showed that this milestone was already crossed in May 2026. Such acceleration indicates that the adoption of AI agents is happening much faster than even the most optimistic analysts assumed.

This trend is already having a significant impact on e-commerce. Research from ARK Investment Management shows that by 2030, AI agents could account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. According to the company's estimates, by the end of the decade agents will process transactions worth up to $8 trillion in online commerce.

Independent data confirms the trend

My observations of the market confirm that this trend is not an isolated opinion. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 demonstrates that automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI-agent traffic increased by 187%, with more than 95% of this traffic coming from retail, streaming, media, travel, and hospitality.

Data from Imperva in the Bad Bot Report 2026 shows that in 2025, 53% of web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly analysts recorded that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.

My analysis: For the crypto industry, this means a fundamental shift. Infrastructure projects focused on identity verification and bot protection are becoming critically important. Investors should pay attention to solutions in digital identification and security, as these will become the foundation of trust in a world where most network participants are not humans.
