Elon Musk: AI agents will soon overshadow human traffic on the web — what this means for the market
The world of web traffic is on the brink of a tectonic shift. Elon Musk has openly endorsed a forecast according to which AI agent activity will exceed traffic from live users many times over in the coming years. This is not just a trend, but a systemic shift that will reshape the digital economy and internet infrastructure.
Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert voiced a bold estimate: within just five years, non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousandfold. Musk, commenting on this, called such a scenario not a matter of probability, but an inevitability. In his words, people risk becoming a "rounding error in internet statistics."
Data confirms: machines already dominate
Reality is outpacing even the boldest expectations. Cloudflare initially predicted that machine traffic would overtake user traffic only by 2027. However, this happened as early as May 2026. The trend is so powerful that independent researchers around the world are recording it.
The HUMAN Security 2026 report shows: automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of requests from AI agents grew by 187%. Moreover, more than 95% of this traffic is concentrated in three sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality.
Imperva, in its Bad Bot Report 2026, calculated that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic came from automated requests. Fastly records a similar picture: bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with services deeming 99% of them undesirable.
Economic impact: trillions of dollars
The impact extends far beyond technical statistics. According to ARK forecasts, by 2030 AI agents could account for nearly 25% of digital spending, up from about 2% in 2025. Company analysts estimate that by the end of the decade, agents will handle amounts of up to $8 trillion in online commerce.
This means we are on the threshold of a new era where economic agents are not people, but algorithms. For the cryptocurrency market, this opens up colossal prospects: micropayments, automated settlements, and decentralized protocols will become the basic infrastructure for the machine economy.
My analysis: The market is still underestimating the speed of this transformation. Infrastructure projects capable of servicing machine transactions and agent verification will become the main beneficiaries in the coming years. Investors should closely watch protocols that provide trust and identification in a world where most "users" are code.
