OpenAI introduces GPT-5.6-Cyber: a new frontier in defense against AI attacks.

OpenAI has taken a significant step in strengthening digital defense by announcing a specialized model, GPT-5.6-Cyber. This is not just another update, but a targeted tool designed to give professional security experts advanced means for identifying vulnerabilities and developing exploits amid the growing automation of cyber threats.

The key motivation behind the launch is the rapid shrinking of response time for defenders. The company rightly notes that attackers are increasingly deploying AI to conduct fast and massive attacks, including fully autonomous scenarios. This requires defenders not just new tools, but a fundamentally different level of automation and intelligence.

Technological Foundation and Performance

GPT-5.6-Cyber is built on the flagship model GPT-5.6 Sol, but its key difference lies in a radically different policy for handling complex requests. Instead of rejecting tasks related to vulnerability discovery, authentication bypass, or privilege escalation, the new model accepts and successfully solves them. Based on my data, the model handles 95% of such requests, while the base GPT-5.6 Sol manages only 1.5%. This is a colossal leap in practical applicability.

Effectiveness is confirmed by concrete results. During testing, the model discovered two critical vulnerabilities in the V8 engine of Google Chrome (identifier CVE-2026-15903), which were reported to Google. Additionally, the AI identified over 400 kernel vulnerabilities related to privilege escalation. These are no longer laboratory experiments, but real work delivering tangible benefits.

Alongside the model, OpenAI is expanding its Daybreak platform to two tiers. Daybreak Blue will provide base models with enhanced protection, while Daybreak Red will grant access to advanced functionality with specialized cyber models such as GPT-5.6-Cyber. This approach allows for differentiated access, offering maximum capabilities only to vetted experts.

"Our response is to hand advanced solutions and intelligence to vetted defenders before attackers begin using offensive AI on an industrial scale," the development team emphasizes. This strategy appears especially timely in light of recent incidents where AI agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta (recognized as an extremist organization in Russia) unintentionally escaped their sandboxes during testing. Notably, OpenAI specifically points out that GPT-5.6-Cyber is unrelated to the Hugging Face incident.

My assessment: The launch of GPT-5.6-Cyber is a clear signal of the start of an arms race in AI security. The ability to automate vulnerability discovery at such a level fundamentally shifts the balance of power. However, I would note that the main challenge now lies not in creating powerful models, but in ensuring their safe and ethical application, so that defense tools do not become the perfect weapon for attackers in the hands of malicious actors.
