Buterin has revised Ethereum's priorities: quantum protection, AI, and privacy are taking center stage.

The Ethereum ecosystem is entering a new phase of transformation. Co-founder of the network Vitalik Buterin has presented an updated vision for blockchain development that radically shifts emphasis compared to the 2023 roadmap. Key focus areas now include quantum resistance, built-in privacy, and the application of artificial intelligence for code verification.
The initial plan included six stages: The Merge, The Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge. However, in early August, the Ethereum Foundation published a revised version — the so-called "strawmap," projected through 2029. According to Buterin, this document contains fundamentally new elements that were absent from previous drafts.
Privacy as a protocol foundation
The most telling change is that privacy is no longer an application-layer option but has become an integral requirement of the protocol itself. This refers to mechanisms that conceal user activity and balances, as well as constructs like wormholes that allow transferring funds without revealing the full transaction history. Also integrated here is FOCIL — a mechanism for forced transaction inclusion that will become the central innovation of the Hegota hard fork.
Quantum resistance and Lean Ethereum
The second key block is post-quantum cryptography and simplification of the technical base. The Lean Ethereum concept unites a series of upgrades capable of rewriting virtually every key element of the protocol. Buterin calls this the "third major iteration" of Ethereum, estimating a timeline of three to four years. In the long term, even replacing the EVM with alternative formats such as RISC-V and leanISA is considered possible.
AI in formal verification
Particular attention deserves the bet on artificial intelligence for verifying protocol operation. Combined with STARK proofs and formal verification, AI tools should ensure the security of new architectural solutions. Buterin emphasizes: such an approach becomes possible solely thanks to progress in the field of AI.
A new view on scaling
The scaling strategy has also undergone changes. Instead of attempting to equally accelerate all types of activity, developers are betting on specialized mechanisms with strict constraints. They are less universal but significantly more efficient in complex scenarios — from token transfers to privacy protocols. The updated plan also includes BLOB structures and gas futures that did not exist in 2023, while some previous initiatives, including many EVM improvements, have been shelved.
It is worth noting that the strawmap remains a living draft rather than a rigid schedule. The Ethereum Foundation has already faced criticism for postponing deadlines and reallocating resources: in June, the organization cut 20% of its staff, restructuring around five clusters. Additionally, in early August, a group of researchers proposed reducing staking rewards, which, according to some analysts, could deprive the network of a key advantage over bitcoin — passive income for holders.
My comment: The revision of priorities is a signal of ecosystem maturity. The bet on quantum protection and AI verification looks timely, but it is precisely the balance between innovation and network stability that will determine whether Ethereum can maintain its leadership in the second half of the decade. The question is only how quickly the team can convert these ambitions into working upgrades without harming the existing infrastructure.
