In his view, traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will, in the near future, far exceed the activity of live users. This is not just a hypothesis, but an inevitable scenario for the industry's development, which I fully share, observing current market trends.
Musk publicly supported the forecast of Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, who shared striking figures during the company's recent earnings call. According to his calculations, within just five years, the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousand times. Seifert emphasizes that in this scenario, people risk becoming a "statistical margin of error" of the internet—so insignificant will their share of the overall data flow become.
Notably, reality is already outpacing even the boldest expectations. Previously, Cloudflare predicted that machine traffic would surpass user traffic only by 2027. However, in fact, this event occurred already in May 2026—a year ahead of schedule. Such acceleration indicates that the adoption of AI agents is proceeding at an exponential pace, and the industry needs to prepare for radical changes.
Impact on the digital economy
The scale of the transformation will affect not only web traffic but also e-commerce. ARK Invest analysts forecast that by 2030, AI agents will account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure was only about 2%. We are talking about a colossal amount—$8 trillion in the online commerce sector by the end of the decade. This means agents will become full-fledged market participants, making purchasing decisions and managing financial flows.
Independent studies confirm this trend. According to HUMAN Security's 2026 report, automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of traffic from AI agents grew by 187%, with more than 95% concentrated in three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality. Imperva data shows that in 2025, 53% of web traffic already consisted of automated requests, while Fastly records 49% bots among all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed unwanted.
