Elon Musk: AI agents will become the dominant force on the web, pushing humans into the background.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made a resonant statement, predicting the inevitable dominance of artificial intelligence traffic over human activity on the internet. In his view, this is not a question of probability but a matter of time—the scenario in which AI agents will generate many times more requests than humans is absolutely irreversible.
Musk supported the forecast of Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer, who presented an extremely ambitious estimate during the recent second-quarter earnings report. According to his calculations, if current growth rates persist, within five years the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousandfold. He aptly characterized humanity's future on the web, stating that people will become merely "a rounding error in internet statistics."
Reality Has Already Outpaced Forecasts
Notably, this trend is developing faster than even the boldest analysts anticipated. Not long ago, Cloudflare expected machine traffic to surpass user traffic only by 2027. However, actual data shows that this pivotal event occurred as early as May 2026. We are witnessing not just acceleration, but a true exponential leap that is reshaping the very structure of the internet.
The impact of AI agents extends far beyond web browsing. According to ARK analysts' estimates, by 2030 autonomous agents could account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure stood at only about 2%. This involves a colossal $8 trillion in online commerce that will be processed without direct human involvement.
Independent Data Confirms the Trend
My own market observations align with these findings. The HUMAN Security report for 2026 records that automated traffic is growing eight times faster than user traffic. From January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI-agent traffic grew by 187%, with more than 95% of this traffic concentrated in three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as tourism and hospitality.
Additional confirmation comes from Imperva data, according to which in 2025, 53% of all web traffic consisted of automated requests. Fastly, in turn, reports that bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with 99% of them deemed undesirable.
My analysis: Such rapid robotization of internet traffic carries both enormous potential for optimizing business processes and serious challenges for cybersecurity and fair competition. Market participants, especially in e-commerce and digital services, need to adapt their infrastructures and strategies right now to the new reality where the primary consumer is not a human but an algorithm.
