Buterin has revised Ethereum's priorities: quantum protection, AI, and privacy are taking center stage.

The Ethereum ecosystem is entering a new phase of its evolution. Co-founder of the network Vitalik Buterin has presented an updated vision for the blockchain's development that differs significantly from the 2023 roadmap. The key changes concern priorities: quantum resistance, protocol-level privacy, and the use of artificial intelligence for code verification now take center stage.

Privacy as a foundation, not an add-on

The most telling change is the rethinking of the role of privacy. While confidentiality was previously considered an option for the application layer, it now becomes an integral requirement for the protocol itself. This refers to mechanisms that hide user activity and balances, as well as constructs such as "wormholes" that allow moving funds without revealing the full transaction history. Special attention deserves the FOCIL component — a mechanism for forced inclusion of transactions that will become the core of the Hegota hard fork.

Quantum resistance and the Lean Ethereum concept

The second strategic block is post-quantum cryptography and a radical simplification of the technical base. The Lean Ethereum initiative represents a series of upgrades capable of rewriting virtually every key element of the protocol. Buterin calls this the "third major iteration" of Ethereum, estimating a timeline of three to four years. In the long term, even replacing the EVM with alternative formats such as RISC-V and leanISA is considered permissible.

AI in formal verification

Special attention deserves the approach to protocol verification. Alongside STARK proofs, Ethereum will rely on formal verification using AI tools. According to Buterin, this approach becomes safe only with modern artificial intelligence capable of handling complex mathematical proofs.

A new view on scaling

The scaling philosophy has also changed. Instead of attempting to equally accelerate all types of activity, developers are betting on specialized mechanisms with strict constraints. They are less universal but significantly more efficient in specific scenarios — from token transfers to complex privacy protocols. Notably, the updated roadmap includes BLOB structures and gas futures — concepts absent in 2023. At the same time, a number of previous plans, including many EVM improvements, have been shelved.

It is important to understand: the strawmap remains a living draft, not a rigid schedule. The Ethereum Foundation has already faced criticism for delays — in June, the organization cut 20% of its staff and restructured around five clusters. However, it is precisely now that the foundations are being laid that will determine Ethereum's competitiveness for years to come.

My comment: The reshuffling of priorities is not just a technical adjustment but a strategic response to the challenges of the times. The quantum threat and the need for AI verification are becoming a reality, and Ethereum is demonstrating a willingness to adapt. However, it is worth closely monitoring the balance between innovation and stability: overly ambitious changes could alienate application developers who value predictability.
