Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has made a resonant statement that changes the perception of the future of the digital space. In his view, traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will, in the coming years, far exceed the activity of live users. This is no longer a hypothesis but an inevitable scenario for the network's development, the entrepreneur emphasized while commenting on forecasts from Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert.
Seifert had earlier voiced a bold assessment: if current growth rates persist, within five years non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by 1,000 times. He aptly described a future where people would become merely a "rounding error in internet statistics." Musk not only agreed with this thesis but also called such a development inevitable rather than probable.
Reality Outpaces Forecasts
Notably, facts are already beginning to confirm these bold claims. Initially, Cloudflare expected machine traffic to surpass user traffic only by 2027. However, reality proved far more dynamic: the tipping point arrived as early as May 2026. We are witnessing not just a trend but a fundamental shift in the structure of the internet economy.
This shift will affect not only web analytics but also e-commerce. According to forecasts from ARK analysts, by 2030 AI agents could account for nearly 25% of all digital spending, whereas in 2025 this figure stood at only about 2%. Experts estimate that by the end of the decade, agents will handle up to $8 trillion in online commerce.
Independent Data Confirms the Trend
My own observations of industry reports confirm this picture. The HUMAN Security 2026 report recorded impressive growth: from January to December 2025, the monthly volume of AI-agent traffic rose by 187%. Moreover, more than 95% of this traffic is concentrated in three key sectors: retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, as well as travel and hospitality.
Researchers at Imperva, in their Bad Bot Report 2026, calculated that in 2025, 53% of all web traffic already came from automated requests. Data from Fastly shows a similar dynamic: bots accounted for 49% of all requests in January 2026, with services deeming 99% of them undesirable.
