Buterin rewrote Ethereum's priorities: quantum protection, privacy, and AI take center stage

The Ethereum ecosystem is entering a new phase of strategic rethinking. Vitalik Buterin has presented an updated vision for the network's development that radically differs from the 2023 roadmap. Key emphases have shifted toward quantum resistance, built-in privacy, and the use of artificial intelligence for formal code verification. This is not just cosmetic tweaking—it is a shift in fundamental priorities for the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
Privacy as a Protocol Requirement
The most telling change is that privacy has ceased to be an optional layer for applications and has become an integral requirement for the protocol itself. This refers to mechanisms that conceal user activity and balances, as well as constructs like wormholes, which allow transferring funds without revealing the full transaction history. Also integrated here is part of the FOCIL mechanism—forced inclusion of transactions in a block—which will become a key innovation of the Hegota hard fork.
Quantum Resistance and Lean Ethereum
The second strategic block is post-quantum cryptography and a radical simplification of the technical foundation. The Lean Ethereum concept combines a series of upgrades capable of rewriting nearly every key element of the protocol. Buterin estimates this work will take three to four years, calling it the network's "third major iteration." In the long term, even replacing the EVM with alternative formats like RISC-V and leanISA is considered—a step that seemed unthinkable until recently.
AI in Formal Verification
Particular attention deserves the bet on artificial intelligence for verifying the correctness of protocol operation. Combined with STARK proofs and formal verification, AI becomes a critical security tool. Buterin emphasizes: "This can only be safe with formal verification, which, in turn, is feasible only with modern AI tools." This is an acknowledgment that the system's complexity has exceeded the capabilities of manual auditing.
A New Approach to Scaling
The scaling strategy has also undergone fundamental changes. Developers have abandoned universal solutions in favor of specialized mechanisms with strict constraints. They lose in flexibility but gain in complex scenarios—from token transfers to privacy protocols. The updated plan includes BLOB structures and gas futures—concepts absent in 2023. At the same time, a number of previous initiatives, including many EVM improvements, have been shelved.
Notably, the strawmap remains a living draft rather than a rigid schedule. The Ethereum Foundation has already faced criticism for deadline postponements and a 20% staff reduction in June. Questions are also raised by the proposal to lower staking rewards, which could undermine Ethereum's main advantage over Bitcoin—yield from simple holding.
My analysis: The shift in focus toward quantum protection and AI is not a nod to fashion but a forced measure of maturity. Ethereum is trying to maintain leadership, but the ambitious three-to-four-year timeline looks optimistic. It is critically important that the foundation finds a balance between innovation and stability; otherwise, it risks losing the trust of a community that is already showing impatience.
