Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has publicly endorsed a radical forecast about the future of the internet: in the coming years, traffic generated by artificial intelligence-based agents will vastly exceed the activity of live users. In essence, human presence online will become merely a minor addition to the powerful stream of machine data.
Musk responded to a statement by Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, who shared truly impressive figures during the company's recent earnings call. According to his estimates, if current growth rates hold, within five years the volume of non-human traffic could exceed user traffic by a thousandfold. "Humans will just become a rounding error in internet statistics," Seifert emphasized, and Musk called this scenario not a question of probability but an inevitability.
Notably, reality is already outpacing even the boldest expectations. Previously, Cloudflare predicted that machine traffic would only surpass human traffic by 2027. However, according to my data, this milestone was already crossed in May 2026. The momentum is accelerating literally before our eyes.
