Buterin has revised Ethereum's priorities: quantum protection, AI, and privacy are coming to the forefront.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has presented an updated vision for the network's development that significantly shifts the focus compared to the 2023 roadmap. In the new "strawmap," projected through 2029, the key directions are quantum resistance, built-in privacy, and the use of artificial intelligence for formal code verification. This is not just a tweak—it is a rethinking of the fundamental priorities of the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
Privacy as a Protocol Standard
The most telling change is that privacy has ceased to be an optional add-on and has become a mandatory requirement for the base protocol layer. This involves mechanisms that hide activity and balances, as well as constructs like wormholes, which allow transferring funds without revealing the full transaction history. The FOCIL mechanism is singled out—forced inclusion of transactions in a block, which will become the central innovation of the Hegota hard fork.
Quantum Protection and Lean Ethereum
The second new block is post-quantum cryptography and a radical simplification of the technical foundation. The Lean Ethereum concept entails a revision of nearly every key element of the protocol. Buterin estimates this "third major iteration" will take three to four years of work. In the long term, even replacing the EVM with alternative formats like RISC-V and leanISA is not ruled out—a step that seemed unthinkable until recently.
AI in Verification
Of particular interest is the application of AI for formal protocol verification. According to Buterin, the security of complex systems is now achievable only through formal verification, which, in turn, becomes feasible only thanks to modern AI tools. This is an acknowledgment that the scale and complexity of Ethereum have exceeded the capabilities of traditional audit methods.
A New Approach to Scaling
Developers have abandoned attempts at universal acceleration of all types of activity. Instead, specialized mechanisms with strict constraints are being created: they are less flexible but significantly more efficient in specific scenarios—from token transfers to privacy protocols. The map also includes BLOB structures and gas futures, which did not exist in 2023, while many previous plans for improving the EVM have been shelved.
It is important to note that the strawmap remains a living draft rather than a rigid schedule. The Ethereum Foundation has already faced criticism for postponing deadlines and has cut 20% of its staff. In this context, the proposal by a group of researchers to reduce staking rewards looks like a logical step, albeit a risky one: it could deprive the network of its main competitive advantage over bitcoin—passive income for holders.
My analysis: The revision of priorities is not just technical routine but a strategic response to two challenges: the quantum threat and the growing complexity of the network itself. However, the bet on AI verification carries a hidden risk: if artificial intelligence tools prove insufficiently reliable, the security of the entire system will be called into question. Ethereum is moving in the right direction, but the cost of error here is extremely high.
