Fork BIP-110 has fallen more than 300 blocks behind the Bitcoin mainnet: analysis of difficulty and prospects

The BIP-110 branch, which split off from the main Bitcoin chain, demonstrates a rare and illustrative case of technical divergence. Currently, this fork lags behind the mainnet by more than 300 blocks, creating a unique situation for analyzing difficulty adjustment mechanisms in the network of the first cryptocurrency.

The key issue lies in the inherited mining difficulty, which stands at 127.48 trillion. This value was carried over from the main network when the fork was created, but without the corresponding hashrate to sustain it. According to the protocol, a difficulty reduction is only possible after the completion of a full 2016-block period, corresponding to block height #963,647. Until that point, the network is forced to operate under artificially inflated difficulty, making mining extremely inefficient.

Estimates of the time required to overcome this barrier vary significantly. Depending on the share of hashrate that can be attracted to the fork, the time range spans from 350 days to 25 years. Currently, BIP-110 accounts for only fractions of a percent of Bitcoin's computational power, making the pessimistic scenario more realistic. At this level of miner participation, the process could drag on for decades unless a substantial influx of capacity occurs.

The situation highlights a fundamental vulnerability of forks that lack their own mechanism for rapid adaptation to hashrate changes. Unlike other networks with dynamic difficulty algorithms, Bitcoin remains conservative in this regard, which protects the main network but leaves alternative branches extremely vulnerable.

My analysis: This case is clear confirmation that the technical viability of a fork depends not only on ideological or technical novelty, but also on economic support. Without significant hashrate, even a technically sound fork is doomed to stagnation. Investors should consider this factor when evaluating such projects, and developers should consider implementing more flexible difficulty mechanisms for test branches.
