Pasqal has achieved a breakthrough: a photonic chip has for the first time held atom-qubits.

French company Pasqal has presented the results of an experiment that could radically change the approach to scaling quantum computing. This is the industry's first demonstration of controlling neutral atoms using laser light generated and routed directly on a photonic integrated circuit.

Breakthrough in Qubit Control

During the trials, a single photonic chip formed four independently controlled optical traps, successfully holding four rubidium atoms. This is the first such result for neutral-atom quantum computers, and it opens new horizons for creating fault-tolerant systems.

The traditional architecture of neutral-atom machines relies on external optical components—so-called optical tweezers—which take up significant space and complicate scaling. As the number of qubits grows, such infrastructure becomes a bottleneck limiting the technology's development. Pasqal offers an elegant solution: moving the key part of the optics directly onto the chip.

From Four Atoms to Thousands

The performance metrics of the chip-based system proved comparable to the traditional approach—the lifetime of trapped atoms was about 27.5 seconds. This is an important indicator that integrated photonics is not only more compact but also does not lag behind classical solutions in functionality.

Although four atoms are merely a conceptual demonstration, it is precisely the optical infrastructure that is considered one of the main barriers to systems with thousands of qubits. Pasqal aims to create machines with more than 10,000 atoms and 100 logical qubits, and integrated photonics plays a key role here.

The technological foundation for the chip was provided by subsidiary Aeponyx, acquired by Pasqal in 2025. This deal was strategically aimed at accelerating the transition to fault-tolerant computing. It is worth recalling that earlier Pasqal, together with Saudi Aramco, launched the first quantum computer in Saudi Arabia.

My analysis: This step is not just an engineering novelty but a signal of the maturity of the neutral-atom platform. Integrating photonics onto a chip solves the fundamental problem of scalability, and if Pasqal manages to maintain its pace, we could see commercially significant quantum systems sooner than skeptics predict. The key question is whether the company can scale this approach without losing qubit coherence, which will be a decisive test for the entire industry.
