Pasqal has made a breakthrough: control of atom qubits has been transferred to a photonic chip for the first time.

French quantum developer Pasqal has announced a landmark achievement: the company has demonstrated, for the first time in the world, the control of neutral atoms using laser radiation generated and routed directly on a photonic integrated circuit. This is an important step toward creating fault-tolerant quantum computers on an industrial scale.

The Essence of the Experiment: A Chip Instead of Bulky Optics

In neutral-atom quantum systems, qubits are represented by individual atoms that are held and moved by focused laser beams—so-called optical tweezers. Traditionally, this optics consists of massive external components, which creates a serious obstacle to scaling: as the number of qubits grows, the system becomes excessively complex and bulky.

Pasqal proposes a radical solution—moving key optical elements directly onto the chip. During the experiment, a single photonic chip formed four independently controlled optical traps, in which four rubidium atoms were successfully held. Critically, the performance of the chip-based system proved comparable to traditional optics: the lifetime of the trapped atoms was about 27.5 seconds.

From Four Atoms to Thousands: A Scaling Strategy

Although four atoms are merely a proof of principle, it is the optical infrastructure that is considered one of the main bottlenecks in increasing the power of neutral-atom processors. Photonic integration directly addresses this problem.

The company has set an ambitious goal: to use integrated photonics in future systems containing more than 10,000 atoms and 100 logical qubits. According to the developers, this approach will radically simplify the optical part of the processor and make the production of quantum systems more manufacturable and scalable.

A key factor in this success was the subsidiary Aeponyx, acquired by Pasqal in 2025. Its technologies formed the basis of the new photonic chip, confirming the strategic foresight of this deal, aimed at accelerating the transition to commercially viable quantum computing.

My comment: This is not just an engineering curiosity, but a systemic response to the main challenge of the neutral-atom architecture. If Pasqal manages to scale this technology to the stated parameters, we will witness a paradigm shift in the production of quantum processors, where chip integration will replace bulky laser tables. Given the recent launch of the first quantum computer in Saudi Arabia in partnership with Saudi Aramco, the company is clearly aiming for practical leadership in the industry.
