Anthropic is implementing global content labeling for Claude: what this means for the AI market

A major step in artificial intelligence regulation: Anthropic has officially announced an update to its documentation on labeling content generated by Claude models. Starting August 2, 2026, all new model versions launched in the European Union will include invisible watermarks in texts from the outset and add digital certificates of origin to files. This requirement directly stems from the European AI Act and the transparency code, which set new standards for the entire industry.
It is important to emphasize: the practice will not be limited to the EU alone. Labeling will apply to Claude products worldwide, including integrations with AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. This is a strategic decision that makes Anthropic a pioneer in unifying transparency standards on a global level, not just within the European Union's jurisdiction.
Transition period and technology limitations
For models released before the specified date, a four-month deferral is provided. This is a reasonable compromise that allows developers and corporate clients to adapt to the new requirements without abrupt disruptions to workflows. Tools for verifying labels, as promised by Anthropic, will appear later, giving the market time to prepare infrastructure.
However, it is also worth noting the company's own honest warning: watermarks are not a panacea. They are harder to detect after text editing, translation, when working with short fragments, or if the user removes metadata from a file. This acknowledgment of technical limitations speaks to the maturity of the approach—instead of marketing promises, we see a realistic assessment of capabilities.
