Trump Media is reconsidering its crypto strategy: $238 million in losses and a bet on bitcoin

Trump Трамп криптовалюты 2025

Trump Media's second-quarter financial report revealed serious problems in the management of its digital reserves. The company's net loss reached $238 million, nearly triple the figures from the previous period. The main blow came from unrealized losses on crypto assets and related securities — $190.4 million. This is a direct consequence of market volatility, which in 2025 has become a test for many corporate treasuries that bet on digital currencies.

Shift in priorities: from crypto ambitions to the media core

The company's management announced its intention to revise its digital treasury strategy. Funds and attention will be redirected to core assets — Truth Social, Truth+, and Truth.Fi. This is a pragmatic step: the media business remains the primary source of revenue, and amid losses, investors expect a focus on operational efficiency rather than speculative instruments.

However, it is telling that even amid losses, Trump Media not only did not divest from bitcoin but also increased its position. As of June 30, the company held 9,477.16 BTC under management, and by July 31, the volume had grown to 12,062 BTC. This is an increase of approximately 27% in a month, indicating long-term confidence in the leading cryptocurrency despite current market turbulence.

From my expert perspective, this behavior is a classic example of "averaging down," where a company uses price declines to build up its holdings. But there is also a risk here: if bitcoin continues to consolidate at low levels, unrealized losses could transition into realized ones, hitting the balance sheet even harder. The strategy revision is not a rejection of cryptocurrencies but rather an attempt to hedge risks while maintaining exposure in case of a bullish reversal.

The key question is whether Trump Media can maintain a balance between investments in digital assets and the development of its core business. In the coming quarters, the market will closely watch how the company implements its announced restructuring and whether its bitcoin position becomes a strategic asset or a source of further losses.
