Bitwise cuts staff by 14%: survival or a strategic maneuver ahead of a new cycle?

layoffs сокращения увольнения fired

Bitwise Asset Management has announced a 14% reduction in its workforce. After the optimization, about 155 employees remain at the company. This decision is not panic, but a forced measure amid a prolonged bearish trend that is weighing on the entire digital assets sector.

The key trigger is a significant decline in the flagship product. The net assets of the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index fund (BITW) have plummeted by 31% since the start of 2026. For an institutional product of this level, this is a serious wake-up call: investors are reassessing risks, and management firms are forced to reshape budgets.

However, it is important to look at the bigger picture. Despite the layoffs, Bitwise is not scaling back its expansion. In February, the company completed the acquisition of staking provider Chorus One. This is a strategic move: optimizing current costs is combined with investments in future technologies. As I see it, this is a classic case of "tightening up now to jump higher later," when a firm prepares for growth amid the integration of cryptocurrencies into traditional finance.

A wave of layoffs in the industry

Bitwise is not the only company tightening its belt. Earlier, Polygon Labs, BitGo, and the exchange Coinbase announced staff reductions. The general logic is simple: market stagnation and AI-based process automation reduce the need for manual labor. This is a trend that will intensify, and companies that fail to adapt risk being left behind.

Notably, optimism in the industry persists. Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan claims that bitcoin is showing resilience to the negative backdrop, and the market has likely already bottomed out. He predicts that wealth management platforms will become the main driver of the next growth phase. This is a bold statement given the current volatility, but it has a right to exist.

Recall that in June, Robinhood also laid off 10% of its staff, citing the need to simplify its management structure. A coincidence? Hardly. The industry is going through a consolidation phase, and those who survive this period will emerge stronger.

My take: The layoffs at Bitwise are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of market maturity. Companies are learning to operate in conditions of low liquidity, and those betting on staking and AI have every chance to seize leadership in the next bull cycle. However, investors should be cautious: the 31% drop in BITW is a reminder that even flagship products are vulnerable.
