Truth API brings Trump Media its first million: a new era of monetizing political content

Truth API Trump Media

Trump Media has officially confirmed: the early access service to Donald Trump's Truth Social posts has already generated over $1 million in revenue. This is the first significant monetization of a platform that has remained deeply unprofitable until now.

The product in question is Truth API, launched in early August. The offer is simple and provocative at the same time: subscribers get priority access to posts from the platform's most influential accounts, including the former president himself. For this privilege, high-frequency trading firms pay between $60,000 and $100,000 per month. More than 10 firms have signed up for the service so far, which has generated total revenue in the seven-figure range.

Interim CEO Kevin McGern described the Truth API launch as an "early stage" of product development during the company's first quarterly report. He also hinted that active negotiations are underway with AI companies, and a separate pricing tier for retail traders may be introduced in the future.

Political and Regulatory Storm

Unsurprisingly, this business model has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers. The core complaint is simple: a company controlled by the Trump family is profiting from presidential statements that can move markets. Congressman Jamie Raskin has already sent a letter to McGern demanding the full list of service subscribers be disclosed. Democrats are pushing for an official SEC investigation, seeing signs of legal violations in selling access to market-relevant information.

Financial Paradox

Despite the new revenue stream, Trump Media's core business remains unprofitable. The net loss in the second quarter was $238 million—more than 10 times higher than last year's figure. Revenue grew 89% to $1.7 million, but most of the losses came from the revaluation of bitcoin and stocks on the balance sheet. Analyst Markus Thielen from 10x Research gave a harsh assessment: the company operates more like a crypto fund than a media platform.

Strategic Pivot

Notably, Trump Media abandoned the joint launch of a prediction markets platform with Crypto.com. This decision fits the broader trend of scaling back crypto initiatives under McGern's leadership. The company still plans to complete its merger with energy firm TAE Technologies, although the deal has been dragging on for several months.

Over the past five days, shares have lost 9% following a recent rally. The key question for investors: can Truth API become a stable revenue source as McGern promises, or is this another one-off story amid the tokenization of political influence?

My take: Monetizing access to Trump's posts is certainly a creative move, but it raises serious ethical and regulatory questions. The market has already seen how political statements move assets, and here we have an institutionalized mechanism for profiting from that. For now, this looks more like a short-term cash injection than a sustainable business model. Without transparency and clear regulation, such a service risks becoming a target for the SEC, which would add volatility to the company's already unstable stock.
