Fidelity integrates staking into Ethereum ETF: a new stage of institutional adoption

Fidelity has made a significant step in the development of institutional crypto products by filing an updated registration form with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its Ethereum ETF under the ticker FETH. The key change is the inclusion of a staking mechanism in the fund's structure, which opens up new opportunities for shareholders.
According to the filed documents, the fund will be allowed to allocate up to 100% of its assets on the Ethereum network. This is the maximum possible threshold, underscoring the management company's confidence in the long-term profitability of staking. The distribution of rewards is as follows: 85% of the total staking rewards will go directly to the fund, while the remaining 15% will be distributed among sponsors, custodial services, and node operators. This model incentivizes all ecosystem participants, ensuring a balance of interests.
Special attention should be paid to the payout mechanism. After deducting all operating expenses, the net income from staking will be distributed quarterly to shareholders in dollar equivalent. This fundamentally distinguishes FETH from many competitors that either avoid staking due to regulatory risks or reinvest income without direct payouts.
Why this matters for the market
Fidelity's decision is not just a technical update but a signal of the crypto market's maturity. Integrating staking into a regulated exchange-traded product enhances Ethereum's appeal as an income-generating asset, especially in the eyes of conservative institutional investors. It also sets a precedent for other issuers that previously feared the legal consequences of such actions.
From my perspective, this move could become a catalyst for reconsidering the SEC's approaches to staking in ETF structures. If the regulator approves the application, we will see a wave of similar updates from other management companies, which will intensify competition and likely lead to lower fees. However, the question of tax implications for holders remains open, especially in the U.S., where staking income may be classified differently.
Overall, Fidelity demonstrates strategic vision that could redefine standards for crypto ETFs. Investors should closely monitor developments, as this will directly impact the profitability of their Ethereum positions.
