The Norwegian giant quietly entered BitMine's capital: $81.9 million on the sovereign fund's balance sheet

The world's largest sovereign wealth fund, Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, has disclosed a position in BitMine Immersion Technologies shares in its reporting. As of June 30, the fund held 6.15 million shares of the company, equivalent to approximately $81.87 million. Notably, this asset did not appear at all in the final report for 2025, and the details of the transaction—the exact entry date and purchase price—remained undisclosed.
This move appears strategically calculated. The Norwegian fund, managing assets worth trillions of dollars, has historically distanced itself from direct crypto investments, preferring classic instruments. The appearance of BitMine in the portfolio is a signal that institutional giants are beginning to view mining companies as a legitimate bridge between traditional finance and digital assets.
What Lies Behind the Numbers
At the time of disclosure, BitMine held 5.805 million ETH under management, with a market value estimated at $9.4 billion. This makes the company one of the largest public holders of ether. For comparison: such a volume exceeds the reserves of most centralized exchanges, underscoring the scale of BitMine's operations.
It is also telling that the fund did not publicize the transaction in its annual report, limiting itself to a quarterly filing. This may indicate a cautious tactic of accumulating a position without excessive market noise. Given ETH's volatility, this approach reduces the risk of price slippage.
My view: this is not a one-off speculation but a long-term bet on the growth of institutional adoption of staking and mining. If BitMine continues to expand its ETH reserves, we could see a wave of imitators among other sovereign funds that are currently closely watching the Norwegian experience. The only question is whether they are ready for the same degree of price risk.
