The Norwegian giant quietly entered BitMine's capital: $81.9 million on the sovereign fund's balance sheet

Europe's largest state investor continues to methodically expand its presence in digital assets, and the latest reporting confirms this. As of June 30, the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global recorded 6.15 million shares of BitMine Immersion Technologies in its portfolio, valuing the position at approximately $81.87 million. Notably, this company was not even mentioned in documents from the end of 2025 — meaning the entry into its capital occurred relatively recently, although the exact transaction parameters — date and purchase price — remain undisclosed.

Norwegian fund strategy: from caution to direct bets

This is not the first time the fund, which manages trillions of dollars in assets, has shown interest in the crypto industry. Previously, it had invested in the largest bitcoin holders through shares of MicroStrategy and Coinbase, but now we are talking about a narrower and more specialized structure. BitMine is not just a miner, but a company that actively works with ether: it manages 5.805 million ETH, which at current prices is equivalent to a substantial $9.4 billion.

The choice of BitMine looks like a logical step for diversification. Unlike classic miners focused on bitcoin, this firm bets on staking and Ethereum infrastructure, giving the fund indirect access to Proof-of-Stake yields without directly purchasing tokens. This is especially relevant amid growing institutional interest in ether following the launch of spot ETFs in the US.

What this means for the market

Disclosing such a position is a strong signal for retail investors and institutions. When a state fund with a conservative reputation begins investing in mining companies, it legitimizes the sector in the eyes of capital managers who previously avoided such assets due to regulatory and ESG risks. However, an $82 million stake for a fund with over $1.7 trillion in assets is a drop in the ocean, but the very fact of participation indicates a long-term bet on cryptocurrency infrastructure.

My view: Norway is acting selectively, choosing companies with real cash flow rather than speculative tokens. This confirms the trend toward the "institutional maturation" of the industry, but the scale should not be overestimated — for the market, this is more of a psychological anchor than a significant influx of liquidity. Watch the subsequent quarterly reports: if the fund increases its stake, it will become a marker of confidence in the sustainability of BitMine's business model.
