Searches at "Gorbushka": law enforcement officers busted a network of illegal crypto exchangers
At the legendary Moscow market "Gorbushka," large-scale operational and investigative measures have been ongoing for the third day. According to my information, this involves the dismantling of an underground network of cryptocurrency exchange points operating under the guise of ordinary retail outlets.
Law enforcement officers are working directly in the pavilions and service areas of the shopping complex. As of now, significant amounts of cash, documentation, and electronic equipment have been seized. Part of the complex's territory is cordoned off, and employees of the illegal exchange services are blocked inside the premises and being questioned on site.
According to preliminary information, the operation has affected the "Gorbushkin Dvor" complex, commonly referred to as "New Gorbushka." It is here, according to investigators, that illegal exchange offices operated for the past several years, serving clients in circumvention of the law.
Systematic crackdown on the market
Notably, this is not the first such raid in recent times. A week earlier, FSB and Ministry of Internal Affairs officers shut down the activities of nine illegal exchange points in the "Moscow-City" business center. More than 20 employees were detained at that time, and the investigation revealed that Ukrainian call centers were laundering money stolen from Russian citizens through these platforms.
It is important to note that the searches in "Moscow-City" took place just three days after the signing of the law on basic cryptocurrency regulation. Judging by the pace of events, law enforcement agencies are targeting a total purge of the shadow sector before the new rules take effect.
The main provisions of the law come into force on September 1, 2026, and existing businesses have been given a transition period until July 1, 2027. However, as events show, law enforcement has no intention of waiting for the transition period to end.
My analysis: We are witnessing a clear signal to the market — the regulator is not going to tolerate gray schemes, even during the transition period. For legal players, this is a positive sign: market consolidation and the ousting of illegal operators will create a healthier competitive environment. But for those who hoped to "wait out" the transition period in the shadows, now is the time to reconsider their business models. The question is not whether the next raid will happen, but where exactly it will occur.
