The Norwegian giant quietly entered BitMine's capital: $81.9 million on the sovereign fund's balance sheet.

Europe's largest state investor continues to quietly expand its presence in digital assets. According to my data, as of June 30, the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) held 6.15 million shares of BitMine Immersion Technologies. The estimated value of this stake is approximately $81.87 million. Notably, this position was absent from the reporting at the end of 2025, indicating the freshness of the deal, although the exact entry date and purchase price remain undisclosed.
This is not the first signal of Oslo's interest in the crypto industry, but it is now becoming particularly significant. The fund, managing assets worth trillions of dollars, is traditionally regarded as a benchmark of conservative institutional approach. Its appearance in the capital of BitMine — a company specializing in immersion mining and ETH management — suggests that even the most cautious players are beginning to view infrastructure crypto projects as a mature asset class.
Of particular interest is the scale of BitMine's operations itself. Currently, the company manages 5.805 million ETH, equivalent to approximately $9.4 billion. This makes it one of the largest institutional holders of ether in the world. For comparison, this volume exceeds the reserves of many centralized exchanges and is comparable to the largest ETH-based ETFs launched in the United States.
The fund's strategy is obvious: it does not buy volatile tokens directly but enters through operating companies that generate real cash flow. This approach minimizes regulatory risks while simultaneously providing exposure to the growth in value of digital assets. In my analysis, this is a sign that the Norwegians view mining and staking not as speculation but as a long-term infrastructure business.
My comment: Given that GPFG has previously invested in Coinbase and other public crypto firms, this step looks like a logical continuation of diversification. However, the secrecy of the deal and the lack of public information about the entry price hint that the fund may have taken a position long before the current rally. For the market, this is a positive signal: if sovereign money is flowing into the mining sector, it means institutional recognition of cryptocurrencies has moved from the experimental stage to the stage of systemic decisions.
