Raids at "Gorbushka": law enforcement uncovered a network of illegal crypto exchangers
Large-scale operational measures continue for the second day at the legendary Moscow market "Gorbushka". According to my information, the investigative actions are directly related to the activities of underground digital asset exchange points that operated under the guise of ordinary retail outlets.
Law enforcement officers have focused their attention on the pavilions and service areas of the shopping complex. This is not a one-time inspection, but a systematic crackdown — operatives are acting with precision, seizing documentation, electronics, and large sums of cash. As of now, there is no official data on detainees, but part of the complex's territory has been cordoned off, and employees of illegal services are blocked inside the premises for procedural actions.
What is happening on the complex's territory
According to information from the facility's security, "people in masks" arrived the day before and have been working without a break. The measures are taking place in the building of "New Gorbushka" — the indoor complex "Gorbushkin Dvor", which moved to the former "Rubin" factory in the 2000s. It is here, apparently, that the exchange points that had been operating over the past few years were based.
Two "Gorbushkas" and systemic pressure
It is important to understand the context: this is not the first raid on shadow crypto exchangers. A week earlier, the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs shut down the activities of nine illegal exchangers in "Moscow City", detaining more than 20 people. It then emerged that Ukrainian call centers were laundering money stolen from Russian citizens through these platforms.
It is telling that the current searches at "Gorbushka" took place just a few days after the signing of the law on basic regulation of digital currencies. The main provisions of the document come into force on September 1, 2026, and existing businesses have been given a transition period until July 1, 2027.
My analysis: We are observing a clear signal to the market — the legalization of cryptocurrencies in Russia does not mean permissiveness. The authorities clearly intend to restore order before the law takes full effect, cleaning out illegal exchange networks. Shadow operators who hoped to wait out the transition period will have to either urgently legalize or leave the market. This is a structural shift that, in the medium term, should consolidate the industry around transparent and regulated players.
