Norwegian giant quietly entered BitMine's capital: $81.9 million on the sovereign fund's balance sheet

The world's largest sovereign investment fund — Norway's Government Pension Fund Global — has disclosed a new position in the crypto industry. According to the latest report as of June 30, the fund holds 6.15 million shares of BitMine Immersion Technologies, equivalent to approximately $81.87 million. This is the first time such a conservative institutional player has directly recorded a stake in a public mining operator specializing in immersion cooling.

Notably, BitMine did not appear at all in the report at the end of 2025. This means the entry into the position occurred over the past few months — likely through the secondary market or as part of a private placement. Neither the exact transaction date nor the purchase price is disclosed in the documentation, which is typical for passive strategies, but the very fact of the Norwegian fund's presence in a miner's assets signals a shift in perception of the sector.

Why this matters for the market

Currently, BitMine manages 5.805 million ETH, which at current quotes is valued at $9.4 billion. This makes the company one of the largest public holders of the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. The combination of "mining + large ETH reserve" attracts attention not only from speculators but also from institutions seeking indirect exposure to digital assets without directly buying coins.

In my analysis, such an investment from Norway is not just portfolio diversification. It is a strategic signal: sovereign money is beginning to view infrastructure crypto companies as a mature asset class, comparable to traditional energy or technology giants. Given that the fund manages $1.7 trillion in assets, the $82 million sum is a drop in the ocean, but the precedent has been set.

I expect that in the coming quarters, other state funds and pension schemes will start looking at similar operators, especially those combining high returns with ESG-compatible solutions like immersion cooling. This could become a catalyst for a revaluation of the entire mining sector on Western exchanges.
