MSCI indexes are preparing for a purge: Strategy, Metaplanet, and Yellow Cake at risk of exclusion

Strategy 2025

International index provider MSCI has come forward with a radical initiative that could reshape the global investment landscape. The matter concerns the introduction of a new methodology aimed at identifying companies that have essentially lost their status as operating enterprises and turned into repositories of non-operating assets. Modeling conducted on the basis of May data indicates a high probability of the exclusion of three notable players from the indices: bitcoin treasury Strategy, Japan's Metaplanet, and investment company Yellow Cake, which specializes in uranium.

For the cryptoasset market, this event carries existential significance. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has become the benchmark example of corporate accumulation of the first cryptocurrency, and its shares were perceived by institutional investors as a proxy instrument for gaining exposure to bitcoin. Exclusion from the MSCI indices, which are tracked by the world's largest passive funds, will automatically trigger forced selling of shares by these funds. According to JPMorgan estimates, the potential passive outflow from Strategy's securities in the event of a negative scenario could reach an impressive $2.8 billion. This will create strong pressure on quotes and undermine liquidity, which is especially painful for shareholders accustomed to volatility, but not to forced dumping.

A pause for maneuver

It is important to emphasize that a final decision has not yet been made. MSCI is in the stage of public consultations, with feedback collection lasting until September 30, and the final results will only be announced on October 16. This gives companies in the risk zone a temporary window to review their capital structure or corporate policy. However, the current business model of Strategy and Metaplanet, based on aggressive bitcoin accumulation, is unlikely to be radically changed to meet the formal criteria of the index.

My analysis shows that this MSCI initiative is not just a bureaucratic whim, but a clear signal to the market about the growing mismatch between traditional definitions of "operating activity" and the new realities of the digital economy. Investors should prepare for such precedents to multiply, and the premium for "crypto exposure" through public companies could significantly decline. Personally, I recommend that holders of Strategy shares closely monitor the MSCI deadlines and consider possible scenarios for hedging positions in case the exclusion is confirmed.
