On August 13, 40-year-old Christopher Rankin officially pleaded guilty to unauthorized access to a protected computer system, which resulted in material damage to his former employer. The incident occurred in 2021, when Rankin, while employed by a mining company in Niagara Falls, used his official position to gain access to more than a hundred of the enterprise's computers.

Instead of performing his direct duties, the offender redirected the computing power of the equipment to his own mining pool. As a result of this scheme, he managed to illegally withdraw 1,067 BTC—at that time, the value of these assets was approximately $53,315. It should be noted that this amount appears relatively modest compared to the scale of the resources used, which indicates the targeted and short-term nature of the attack.

The final sentence will be handed down on November 17. Under current legislation, Rankin faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of $100,000. Given the nature of the crime and the absence of aggravating circumstances in the form of major damage, the actual term will likely be closer to the lower limit; however, the very fact of criminal prosecution will be a serious reputational blow to the offender.

This case highlights the importance of internal control and monitoring in mining operations. Even with protected systems in place, the human factor and trust in employees remain key vulnerabilities. Companies should implement multi-level authentication and regular audits of the actions of personnel with access to equipment to minimize the risks of such incidents in the future.
