A mining farm employee in the U.S. has pleaded guilty to stealing bitcoins: details of the insider scheme

Insider threats remain one of the most underestimated problems in the crypto industry. Another confirmation of this is the case of 40-year-old Christopher Rankin, who officially pleaded guilty on August 13 to unauthorized access to a protected computer system. The incident occurred back in 2021 at a mining facility in Niagara Falls, where Rankin was employed.
The scheme used by the attacker was painfully simple but effective. Having legitimate access to the company's infrastructure, he penetrated the control systems of hundreds of ASIC miners without authorization and redirected their computing power to his own pool. Thus, all the mined hashrate over a certain period went into Rankin's pocket rather than his employer's.
As a result of this manipulation, he withdrew 1,067 BTC, which at that time was valued at $53,315. Today, that amount is equivalent to approximately $65,000, but the main point is not the value, but the precedent itself. Mining companies often rely on trust in their employees, especially those responsible for equipment maintenance. However, it is precisely such specialists who have the greatest opportunities for abuse.
Rankin's sentencing will take place on November 17. He faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $100,000. At first glance, the punishment seems lenient for a crime involving the theft of crypto assets, but this reflects the specifics of the charge—it is classified as unauthorized access rather than large-scale theft.
