In the digital asset industry, insider threats remain one of the most underestimated problems, and a recent case in the United States is a clear illustration of this. On August 13, 40-year-old Christopher Rankin officially pleaded guilty to charges of unauthorized access to protected computer systems, which resulted in material damage to his employer.

The incident occurred in 2021 at a mining facility in Niagara Falls. Using his position, Rankin gained access to a hundred of the company's industrial units and redirected their computing power to his own pool. In this way, the attacker withdrew 1,067 BTC, which at the time was valued at $53,315. It is worth noting that today this amount is significantly higher, highlighting the growing appeal of such crimes in the eyes of dishonest employees.

The final sentence will be handed down on November 17. The maximum punishment Rankin faces is imprisonment for up to one year, as well as a fine of $100,000. The relatively lenient sanction is noteworthy: in the context of the crypto industry, where theft amounts often run into the millions, such an approach could become a signal for other potential violators.

This case is a vivid example that even large companies with industrial capacities are not immune to insider attacks. Many mining farm operators pay attention to external cyber threats but forget to monitor the actions of their own personnel. I recommend strengthening control over access to pools and implementing multi-factor authentication for critical operations—otherwise, such incidents will become not an exception, but a trend.
