How to properly top up a crypto account: a primer from an analyst

Managing digital assets begins with a basic but critically important step — funding your trading account. At first glance, the procedure seems trivial, yet it is at this stage that beginners make most of the fatal mistakes that lead to loss of funds.

Main ways to deposit funds

Today, the industry offers several channels for deposits. The most common remains bank transfer (SEPA or SWIFT), which provides a direct link between the fiat system and the exchange. An alternative is buying stablecoins through P2P platforms, where you interact directly with a counterparty, bypassing intermediaries. A third option is a cryptocurrency transfer from an external wallet, which requires special attention to the choice of network.

Critical mistake: wrong network

The most common problem is sending funds over an unsupported network. For example, transferring USDT on the TRC-20 network to an address that expects tokens in the ERC-20 standard will lead to the irreversible loss of the asset. Always check which network the exchange supports for a specific coin, and verify the address before confirming the transaction.

Fees and speed: what to choose

Each method has its own economics. Bank transfers are usually cheaper but take from several hours to several days. Cryptocurrency transactions are almost instant, but their cost depends on blockchain congestion. During hype periods, the transfer fee on the Ethereum network can increase severalfold, making small deposits unprofitable. For large amounts, I recommend using layer-2 networks or alternative blockchains with low fees.

Security above all

Never enter your card details on suspicious websites, even if they visually copy the interface of a well-known exchange. Always use two-factor authentication and check the domain in the address bar. Remember: a legitimate platform will never ask for your private key or seed phrase to fund your account.

My advice: before your first deposit, run a test transaction for the minimum amount. This will take five minutes but will save you from days of stress in case of an error. In a world where transactions are irreversible, foresight is the only insurance.
