On August 13, 40-year-old Christopher Rankin officially pleaded guilty to charges of unauthorized access to protected computer systems causing damage. According to investigation materials, Rankin, while employed by a mining company in Niagara Falls, New York, used his official position to gain access to more than a hundred computers involved in cryptocurrency mining. Instead of directing the computing power to his employer's pool, he secretly redirected it to his own pool. As a result of this manipulation, the attacker managed to withdraw 1.067 BTC — equivalent to approximately $53,315 at the time. The amount may seem modest by today's standards, but in the context of 2021, it was a significant theft that caused the company both direct financial damage and reputational losses.

Notably, the scheme was not uncovered immediately, which highlights the complexity of monitoring internal processes at mining enterprises. Rankin faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $100,000. The final sentence will be handed down on November 17, and for now, it remains to be seen whether the court will take into account the defendant's cooperation with the investigation.

Mining farms spend millions on equipment and electricity, but often underestimate the risk posed by personnel with access to critical infrastructure.
