Bitcoin broke through the $63,000 support: what is behind the sudden pullback
On August 14, the leading cryptocurrency once again came under pressure, breaking through the psychologically important level of $63,000. The asset updated its early August lows, indicating the market's continued fragility following recent volatility.
At the time of data recording, BTC is trading around $62,600. The decline over the past 24 hours amounts to approximately 1.5%. Notably, Ethereum is showing relative resilience: the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap has remained virtually unchanged, holding near $1,860.
ETFs and Fund Flows: A Warning Signal
The key negative factor was data on spot Bitcoin ETFs. For the first time since late July, we are observing a two-day streak of outflows. On August 12 and 13, investors withdrew a total of $192 million. This suggests that institutional interest, which previously served as a growth driver, is now weakening.
It is especially telling that the decline is occurring against the backdrop of positive macroeconomic statistics. The U.S. Producer Price Index fell to 4.7%, beating forecasts, which triggered a rise in stock indices. However, the crypto market ignored this positive news, pointing to internal issues rather than the external environment.
Market Analysis: Imbalance and Distortion
My analysis confirms the conclusions of my colleagues at XWIN Japan: the main reason for the weakness is insufficient spot demand while futures positions remain elevated. Open interest on Binance has continued to grow since early July and now stands at $27.09 billion. This creates a dangerous imbalance: the market is overheated by leverage but not backed by real purchases.
When positive news fails to drive growth, it is a classic signal to close leveraged positions. Additional pressure comes from the potential supply zone around $68,700, where the short-term cost basis of holders is concentrated. In the absence of liquidity inflows, this level will become significant resistance.
Earlier, Glassnode analysts warned of the risk of a pullback to $58,500. Given the current dynamics, this scenario looks increasingly realistic. The market either needs a sharp increase in spot demand or a correction to clear overheated positions. Until then, any attempts at growth will remain vulnerable.
My professional opinion: the current situation is not panic, but rather a natural consolidation phase following a prolonged period of uncertainty. Investors should closely monitor the $60,000 and $58,500 levels. A break below the latter would open the door to a deeper correction, while a return above $65,000 would restore bullish momentum.
