Imagine a truck driver where the neural network doesn't just plot the route, but scans every movement, fines for singing, and forbids distractions from the phone. Formally, a human is behind the wheel, but in reality, an algorithm controls them. This isn't a dystopian plot, but the daily reality of the modern economy, which writer Cory Doctorow in his new book, "The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI," calls the "reverse centaur problem."

Inversion of the Myth: From Symbiosis to Parasitism

At the core of the concept lies a dichotomy. The classic "centaur" is a human enhanced by technology, where the machine acts as the body and the human as the head. Such symbiosis, according to the author, is a boon. But there is also a complete inversion: a "mechanical head on a human body." In this model, the human becomes an appendage serving the machine at an inhuman pace.

The term traces back to Garry Kasparov, who, after his defeat by Deep Blue in 1997, proposed the "advanced chess" format. It became clear then that a grandmaster paired with AI is always stronger than either alone. The question is who makes decisions in that pairing.

Where "Reverse Centaurs" Hide Today

The most striking examples are in manual labor. Amazon drivers are forced to skip breaks to meet quotas set by the algorithm. In warehouses, employees adapt to the rhythm dictated by the machine, not the other way around. This is a classic case where automation doesn't liberate but enslaves.

Similar degradation occurs in intellectual professions. Programmers using AI assistants turn from code creators into code overseers. Lawyers and doctors working on the human-in-the-loop model are forced to verify content at "superhuman speed," bearing full responsibility for algorithmic errors. In media, three journalists with neural networks produce the volume of content that ten once did, but their role is reduced to filtering machine-generated drafts.

The Economy of Subordination and the Bubble

The key driver of this transformation is "fun arithmetic" for the employer. Replacing ten employees with three using AI is profitable, even if the burden on the remaining staff becomes inhuman. Savings are achieved not through efficiency, but by shifting risks and responsibility onto personnel. That's why management almost always loves AI: for them, it's a tool of control, not subordination.

Doctorow also links the spread of "reverse centaurs" to the giant financial bubble around AI, estimated at $1.4 trillion. The seven largest companies make up more than a third of the stock market, but their valuations rest on mutual expectations. When the bubble bursts, only a "useful residue" will remain—cheap open-source models for local tasks.
