Riot Platforms raises $573 million to build an AI campus in Texas: a bet on diversification

Riot Platforms, one of the leading public bitcoin miners, has taken a decisive step toward expanding its infrastructure base. The company has completed raising project debt financing of up to $573 million, which will be directed toward purchasing high-performance equipment and developing a 191 MW data center for artificial intelligence in Rockdale, Texas.

A key element of the deal was Morgan Stanley's participation as administrative agent for the group of lenders. This signals growing interest from traditional financial institutions in hybrid projects at the intersection of mining and high-tech computing. Notably, the borrowing terms proved quite attractive for the market: the annual rate is about 6.4%, and access to funds opened for Riot on April 10.

The debt maturity is set for December 31, 2026, giving the company a sufficient time horizon to complete construction and bring the facility to operational capacity. This approach reflects Riot's strategic vision: not just increasing hash rate, but also monetizing energy assets amid growing demand for computing resources for AI workloads.

Redirecting part of the capacity to the AI segment is not a passing trend but a pragmatic response to the volatility of bitcoin profitability. While competitors fight for every exahash, Riot is diversifying its business model, turning its sites into multifunctional data centers. This increases the company's resilience to cyclical downturns in the crypto market and opens new revenue streams.

In my view, a 6.4% rate on such a volume of financing is a clear sign of trust from lenders. However, the project's success will depend on Riot's ability to maintain a balance between traditional mining and AI services without allowing resource cannibalization. In the long term, it is precisely such hybrid players that could become industry leaders if the AI market continues to grow at the same pace.
