Riot Platforms raises $573 million to build an AI campus in Texas: a bet on diversification

American mining giant Riot Platforms has made a decisive move toward high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence. The company has closed project debt financing of up to $573 million, which will go toward purchasing equipment and developing a 191 MW data center for AI workloads. The facility is located on the territory of Riot's existing campus in Rockdale, Texas.
The deal structure looks indicative for the market. Morgan Stanley serves as the administrative agent for the lender pool, highlighting the interest of traditional financial institutions in infrastructure projects in the crypto industry. The funds are raised at an annual rate of about 6.4% — noticeably lower than typical terms for mining companies, which speaks to the high quality of the collateral base and the project's prospects.
Key deal parameters: access to the loan opened on April 10, with repayment scheduled for December 31, 2026. This horizon allows Riot not only to complete construction and bring capacity online but also to achieve operational breakeven amid growing demand for AI computing.
This step is not just an attempt to cash in on the hype around artificial intelligence. For Riot, it is strategic diversification: bitcoin mining remains a volatile business dependent on the price of the first cryptocurrency and network difficulty. Redirecting part of the capacity to AI hosting creates a stable cash flow from long-term contracts with cloud providers, reducing risks for shareholders.
It is important to note that Rockdale is not a random choice. Texas offers cheap electricity and favorable regulation, while Riot's existing infrastructure allows for reduced capital expenditures on site preparation. Combined with the low financing rate, this makes the project one of the most competitive in the sector.
In my assessment, we are witnessing the beginning of a structural shift in the business models of major miners. Those who manage to repurpose excess capacity for AI will gain a significant advantage over competitors in the next 2-3 years. Riot is clearly striving to secure a place in the first echelon of this transformation.
