Riot Platforms raises $573 million to build an AI campus in Texas: a bet on diversification

Riot Platforms, one of the leading players in the bitcoin mining sector, is making a decisive move toward high-performance computing. The company has closed a deal to secure project debt financing of up to $573 million. The funds will be directed toward purchasing equipment and developing a 191 MW data center, which will be located on the site of the miner's existing campus in Rockdale, Texas.
The financing was arranged with Morgan Stanley acting as administrative agent for the lender syndicate. The loan terms look attractive for the market: the annual rate is approximately 6.4%, reflecting lenders' confidence in the project's prospects. Riot gained access to the funds on April 10, with repayment of obligations scheduled for December 31, 2026.
This step is not just an infrastructure expansion, but a strategic maneuver. Amid cryptocurrency market volatility and growing competition in mining, Riot is actively diversifying its business, redirecting part of its capacity to serve AI workloads. Renting out computing resources for neural network training and inference is becoming a high-margin segment capable of ensuring a stable cash flow independent of bitcoin's price.
The choice of Texas is no coincidence: the state offers cheap electricity and a favorable regulatory climate. However, it is worth noting that 191 MW is only the first phase. Given the company's ambitions and current demand for AI capacity, I would not rule out Riot multiplying this figure in the coming years.
My view: The deal's terms (a 6.4% rate with a term through the end of 2026) look balanced, but the key risk is the speed of bringing capacity online. If Riot delays the launch, interest on the debt will weigh heavily on the operating budget. Nevertheless, in the long term, this is the right bet: the AI infrastructure market is growing exponentially, and those who manage to carve out a niche will gain a competitive advantage.
