Ireland tightens the rules of the game: new AML strategy hits private wallets and gambling

Ireland's Ministry of Finance has presented its first comprehensive plan to combat money laundering and terrorist financing in the cryptocurrency sector. This is not just a formality, but a systemic signal to the market: the era of anonymous transactions in the jurisdiction is coming to an end.
The key blow is aimed at private crypto wallets. Transfers from such addresses will now be subject to enhanced checks. This involves not only standard KYC, but also a deeper analysis of the origin of funds. For foreign crypto companies wishing to work with Irish counterparties, an increased level of due diligence is being introduced. This means that foreign exchanges and custodians will have to prove the transparency of their internal procedures, otherwise access to the Irish market will be closed.
Gambling in the Crosshairs
Special attention in the strategy is given to the gambling business. Accepting cryptocurrencies as a source of funds for gambling will now be regulated by industry standards. This is a logical step, given that it is in this sector that attempts to launder criminal proceeds are often recorded. Gambling operators will have to implement deposit verification mechanisms to track their origin.
As for the implementation of the European MiCA regulation's norms in the AML/CFT part, the Irish regulator assesses current progress as "well advanced." However, the actual mandatory industry standards are planned to be introduced only in the second half of 2027. Thus, businesses have a time lag for adaptation, but it is not infinite.
My analysis: Ireland is choosing the path of strict preventive control rather than post-hoc investigations. For the industry, this is a dual signal: on the one hand, legalization through regulation, on the other, an inevitable increase in operational costs for compliance. Players who invest in transparency now will gain a competitive advantage, while gray schemes with private wallets in this jurisdiction will be quickly cut off.
