Riot Platforms raises $573 million to build an AI campus in Texas: a bet on diversification

American miner Riot Platforms continues its aggressive expansion into high-performance computing. The company has closed a deal to secure project debt financing of up to $573 million, intended for equipment purchases and infrastructure development of a 191 MW data center for artificial intelligence. The facility is located at Riot's campus in Rockdale, Texas, which has historically been one of the largest hosting sites for Bitcoin mining.
A key element of the deal was Morgan Stanley's participation as administrative agent for the lender group. This signals growing interest from traditional financial institutions in projects combining digital asset mining and cloud computing. The borrowing terms look attractive for the market: the annual rate is fixed at approximately 6.4%, below average market rates for crypto-oriented loans. Funds became available to the company on April 10, with a final maturity date of December 31, 2026.
This move is not just a financial maneuver but a strategic pivot. Riot is clearly seeking to reduce its dependence on Bitcoin volatility by repurposing part of its energy capacity for leasing computing resources for AI workloads. Given that demand for GPU clusters for neural network training is growing exponentially, and Texas offers cheap electricity and favorable regulation, such diversification appears timely. However, it is worth noting that 191 MW is only a small fraction of Riot's total energy portfolio, so talk of a complete transition from mining to AI is premature.
From my perspective, using project financing with a fixed rate is a prudent hedge against inflationary risks. But the main question remains open: can the company find enough long-term clients for its AI capacity to ensure a return on investment by the end of 2026? For now, the market is reacting positively to the news, but the real test will come when the first contracts are signed.
