Harvard freezes Bitcoin-ETF reduction: a strategic pause or a shift in priorities?

Как ETF и майнеры меняют циклы роста биткоина

The Harvard University endowment fund, one of the largest institutional players in the market, is showing a curious signal: its position in BlackRock's bitcoin ETF (IBIT) remained unchanged as of June 30. According to the latest 13F filing with the SEC, the fund still holds 3.04 million shares worth $101.4 million — exactly the same as a quarter earlier.

This is a sharp contrast to previous dynamics. At the end of 2025, Harvard cut its stake by 21%, and in the first quarter of 2026, by another 43%. For two consecutive quarters, the fund methodically offloaded the digital asset, and now — a complete halt. This behavior suggests not a bullish reversal, but rather a tactical wait-and-see stance: managers clearly see no reason for further selling, yet are not ready to increase exposure.

The contrast with gold is especially telling. Harvard's investments in gold ETFs now significantly exceed its bitcoin position: $171.2 million versus $101.4 million. This ratio — $1.7 to $1 — clearly reflects a preference for a traditional safe-haven asset amid macroeconomic uncertainty. Institutions, it seems, still perceive bitcoin as a high-risk instrument and gold as a reliable anchor.

Nevertheless, the pause in reduction itself is not a neutral signal. Against the backdrop of a broader trend where many large funds in 2026 are actively diversifying their crypto exposure, Harvard's decision to hold its position may indicate that current price levels are seen as fair. Or, more likely, the fund is waiting for a catalyst — such as a decision on stablecoin regulation or a new round of volatility — to reconsider its strategy.

My analysis: For the market, this is rather a neutral-to-positive sign. If Harvard had continued reducing, it would have strengthened the bearish narrative of institutional flight. The halt, however, gives reason to suggest that the bottom in demand from large endowments may already have been reached. But don't get carried away — the fund is clearly voting with its dollars for gold, and that is a trend that has not yet turned in bitcoin's favor.
