Alibaba's Qwen models have surpassed the 3 billion download mark: an analysis of the phenomenon

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has reached an impressive milestone: the cumulative number of downloads of its open-source AI models from the Qwen family has exceeded 3 billion over the past six months. This is a landmark event that is radically reshaping the balance of power in the global artificial intelligence market.

The corporation has released more than 460 neural networks into the public domain, on the basis of which third-party developers have created over 300,000 derivative models. Such an ecosystem is a direct path to industry dominance, and the numbers confirm this.

Hugging Face Data: Who Is Really Leading

Analytics from the Hugging Face platform, published in its semi-annual report, sheds light on the scale of the phenomenon. Over seven months of the current year, Qwen models were downloaded 2.05 billion times, and the number of derivative repositories reached 151,448. For comparison, Google's figure stands at only 82,506. For the entire year of 2026, Google model downloads are estimated at 418 million, and Meta's at 227 million. It is important to emphasize that Hugging Face statistics only account for activity within its own ecosystem, excluding API requests and private corporate deployments, which makes the real gap even more significant.

The dynamics are also noteworthy: the number of Qwen derivative repositories grows by 180–210 daily. Of the 28,531 GGUF conversions of these models on the platform, only 54 were created by Alibaba itself — the rest is community work. This indicates that Qwen has become the de facto standard for developers choosing a base for fine-tuning and deployment.

The Secret to Success: Scaling Strategy

Qwen's superiority over competitors is explained by three key factors. First, regular updates to the product line. Second, unprecedented coverage across all scales: from sub-billion versions to the flagship Qwen3.8-Max with 2.4 trillion parameters. But the decisive factor has been the breadth of the model lineup. Data shows that versions with fewer than 1 billion parameters account for 83% of all downloads in the platform's history, while giants over 100 billion account for only 1%.

Laboratories focused exclusively on large LLMs are rapidly falling behind. For example, Moonshot AI, which almost never releases models smaller than 70 billion, has gathered only 37 million downloads over the year — roughly 55 times fewer than Qwen. Alibaba also leads unconditionally in the local deployment segment: its GGUF builds are downloaded 39.6 million times per month, while Gemma's figure is 20.8 million, and Llama's is only 7.5 million.

A Paradigm Shift in Open AI

The report demonstrates a tectonic shift: in almost every month of the current year, the largest open model from China surpassed all American releases in size. The ceiling for Chinese models ranged from 754 billion to 2.78 trillion parameters, while for US competitors it did not exceed 130 billion in five out of seven months. Moreover, in China, 59% of models with more than 20 billion parameters are released under the Apache 2.0 license, which does not restrict commercial use. For American developers, the picture is different: 29% under open licenses, 41% under proprietary terms, and 30% without any license specified.

Notably, in the US, the leaders in the number of new open models were not AI labs but chip manufacturers: AMD and Nvidia each released more than 200 repositories, leaving Google and Meta far behind.

My analysis: Qwen's success is not just statistics but a marker of the maturity of China's AI industry. Alibaba's strategy, which bets on openness and the availability of models of any size, creates a network effect that is extremely difficult to overcome. While American giants compete for primacy in creating ultra-large LLMs, China is methodically capturing the real market of developers who will determine the future of applied AI. This is a classic example of an ecosystem winning over individual technological breakthroughs.
