Elon Musk joins the discussion on AI risks: support for the head of Anthropic and a warning about the "goodwill" of superintelligence

The technology community's attention has once again turned to the question of artificial intelligence safety. Elon Musk, known for his controversial stance on AI, unexpectedly supported recent statements by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, adding a weighty argument to the long-running debate about the future development of technology.

A Dialogue on Risks and Benefits

The occasion for the discussion was a public speech by Amodei, in which he attempted to balance the grim predictions often voiced by experts. Investor Gavin Baker sparked the discussion by noting that the reputation of Anthropic's head as an "alarmist" is not entirely fair. Amodei himself explained that his essays, devoted to both the risks and benefits of AI, are often distorted in short interviews that "collect clicks" on negativity.

Amodei's key point, which he developed in response to criticism, lies in society's deep distrust of technology corporations and government institutions. This distrust, accumulated over decades, is directly projected onto artificial intelligence. That is why he advocates for mandatory testing of leading models, rather than voluntary promises from developers, and warns of the danger of fragmented national regulations in this field.

Musk's Position: Hope for "Kindness"

Musk, reacting to Amodei's thread, called the dialogue "interesting" and almost verbatim repeated the thought of Naval Ravikant, who metaphorically described the problem: you cannot create a god and put it on a leash. Musk's response contained a restrained admission: "I hope AI will be kind to us." This statement is not just a retweet, but a signal that even the most influential technology leaders acknowledge: if humanity loses control over superintelligence, the only hope will remain its own "goodwill."

Notably, Musk's support for Anthropic is not accidental. He previously criticized OpenAI for its closed nature, noting that Amodei chose a different path. However, his views on regulation diverge: Musk is skeptical of initiatives like California's SB 53 bill, which Anthropic supports, pointing to possible loopholes for large corporations.

My View on the Situation

This public exchange of opinions is an important marker for the market. When figures like Musk begin to openly discuss existential risks, it signals a shift of the discussion from the technical sphere to the political one. For technology investors, this means that AI regulation is inevitable, and companies that are already building a dialogue with authorities (like Anthropic) may find themselves in a more advantageous position in the long term. The only question is whether the industry can find a balance between innovation and safety without succumbing to total bureaucratization.
